Synagogue/Society Description: |
B'nai Zion Congregation was founded in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh around 1907 and formalized its community institutions in the early 1920s. A group from neighboring Wilkinsburg went independent around 1936, forming Beth Israel Congregation. As the Jewish population in the area declined in the 1960s, Beth Israel closed and transferred its memorial board to B'nai Zion. B'nai Zion relocated to the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh in 1965. The congregation merged with Young People's Synagogue in 1996. This memorial board likely includes members of all three congregations: B'nai Zion, Beth Israel, and Young People's Synagogue.
