List Survivors Registered or Residing in Bialystok, Warsaw, Wloclawek, Przemysl, Dzialoszyce and Other Polish Cities - 1945

Introduction by YIVO Institute for Jewish Research

BACKGROUND

The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) is the world’s oldest refugee agency, formally incorporated in 1903. HIAS emerged from the work of several agencies which supported Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe beginning in the 1880s.

This data set comes from records of HIAS’s work in France during the war years. HIAS provided assistance to refugees in the form of legal support, monetary aid, and family reunification services, among other things, during this timeframe.

DATABASE

This database includes 4,399 records of survivors that registered or were residing in various Polish cities at the end of June, 1945.

The fields for this database are as follows:

  • Image # (Scan image number within the YIVO folder)

City Names: Each list focuses on survivors that registered in that city at the end of June, 1945.  Within the list, an additional city is recorded but not given a consistent description.  For example, some records use “Origin”, “Birthplace” or “Residence 1939”.

Therefore, each record includes the name of the “List City” in the first field, followed by the additional city name in “Other City” and its description in “Other City Description”.

Below are the names of the lists within this collection including all the cities mentioned within multiple-city lists.
