The Jeff Malka Sephardic CollectionSoutheast France Name Declaration - 1808
The Jewish community of Fes was founded in the 8th century (CE). For centuries Fes was a Torah as well as a study center of the holy language. Donash Ben Labrat, Rabbi Yitshak Alfassi - the Riif, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon - the Rambam, and other important rabbis lived in that community. Several rabbinical dynasties grew and developed in Fes. This information comes from: Fas vehakhameiha [Fes and Her Rabbis] by Rabbi David Ovadia (Jerusalem, 1979. 2v. Hebrew). AcknowledgementsWe acknowledge the tremendous contribution of Dr. Alexandre Beider, who made this information available. In addition, we express our grateful appreciation to Dr. Jeff Malka for his monumental ongoing effort to collect and make accessible Sephardic genealogical information, and for his generosity in contributing his extraordinarily valuable collection to JewishGen.
