"Independent Israelites of Yonkers was incorporation May 7th, 1895. NYS Department of State ID#28494, and is still active. On the corner of Riverdale and Prospect avenues Yonkers, was the site of the former Ohab Zedek, Yonkers’, and Westchester County’s, first official synagogue. Created in 1887, the synagogue was first known as the Congregation Sons of Israel. Its founder, Yonkers’ Adolf Klein, is the same man who brought the first Torah from New York City to Getty Square on the Old Putnam Railroad spur that ran through the downtown. In the early 1900’s, the synagogue was incorporated as Congregation Ohab Zedek, the name it held for seven decades.
As time passed, the demographics changed in Yonkers and in the 1970s Ohab Zedek merged with Young Israel in Riverdale. Eventually, the Prospect Street building was demolished."
