In 1874, Congregation B'nai Israel purchased a 5 acre site at Oakland Cemetery. The congregation purchased more land in 1902 and 1926, expanding the cemetery to 9.5 acres. In 2010, Oakland Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
