Cemetery Description: |
The first Jewish cemetery in Sacramento was established on November 12, 1850. The land was purchased by Moses Hyman who donated the money that he received as a mohel to purchase the cemetery on J Street. The oldest burial in the cemetery is that of Samuel Harris Goldstein who drowned on May 30, 1850. It is not known where he was initially buried but he was moved to the old cemetery on J Street. He was again moved when the Home of Peace cemetery moved the bodies from the old J Street cemetery to the present location. This is the oldest known burial in a Jewish cemetery in California.
