Cemetery Description: |
Located in the southeast quadrant of the capital city, Adas Israel cemetery was established to retain traditions that were being modified by the older, Washington Hebrew congregation. The congregation was founded in 1869 and the first recorded burial in the cemetery was that of the stillborn twins of the Hammersch family on June 7, 1870. In 1988, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW) and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (JHSGW) embarked upon a documentation project that built upon a foundation of research done in the 1960's by the latter group. There were significant gaps in the record-keeping of the cemetery in the earliest years and so the research team relied on congregational and public records to fill in the missing pieces, such as cause of death and parents' names. This is an on-going project for JGSGW and in the next phase we will revisit the cemetery and photograph the stones. The cemetery is locked and arrangements must be made in advance by calling the synagogue at 202-362-4433.
