Cemetery Description: |
This is a private family burial ground that belonged to Levi Sheftall, wherein are interred those who could claim kinship. It is noted that a number of the tombstones have been borrowed by neighbors for use as steps and those that are left are barely legible. Only four are legible today and listed in this index. Use of the cemetery began in approximately 1765 and continued until the 1860s. It was originally located at the southern edge of town, but now resides next to contemporary buildings. This cemetery is walled and gated. To access the site, contact Congregation Mickve Israel. Information was transcribed from "Jewish Cemetery Savannah, GA," WPA project no. 165-34-6999 (1937).
The cemetery is enclosed by a brick walls with a padlocked iron gate, through about six flat markers are visible but not readable. Contact Congregation Mickve Israel (www.mickveisrael.org) for information on access.
