The Jewish Burial Ground was formally established by Mordecai Sheftall in 1773 from land granted to him in 1762 by King George III as a parcel that "shall be and forever remain to and for the use and purpose of place of burial for all persons whatever professing the Jewish Religion." Use of the cemetery began in the 1750s (prior to its formal establishment) and continued until the 1880s. It was originally located at the southern edge of town, but now resides next to contemporary buildings. This cemetery is walled and gated and permission to access the site must be granted by Congregation Mickve Israel. Information was transcribed from "Savannah's Old Jewish Community Cemeteries," by B.H. Levy (1983) and "Jewish Cemetery Savannah, GA," WPA project no. 165-34-6999 (1937).
The cemetery is enclosed by a high brick walls with padlocked wooden doors. No graves are visible from the outside. Contact Congregation Mickve Israel (www.mickveisrael.org) for information on access.
