This cemetery was established by the Polish / Russian Jews in Sag Harbor. A second cemetery was established by the Jews in Sag Harbor of Hungarian descent (Independent Jewish Cemetery Association). The congregations of Polish / Russian Jews and the Hungarian Jews merged in 1918 to create Congregation Adash Israel and subsequently changed their name to Temple Adas Israel in 1948. Both cemeteries are next to each other but are still distinct areas.
