Cemetery Description: |
The Trustees of the Vincennes University Foundation are in charge of the Crown Hill Jewish Cemetery in Vincennes. The cemetery has been documented in a walk-around in 1980 by the Cemetery Manager of the city of Vincennes. The cemetery is not locked.
There are 59 known burials, the earliest appearing to be from 1876. There is one for a child, that has the date of 1846 and a question mark. Possibly the correct date could not be read. There are a few early stones all in Hebrew. As soon as a translation can be made they will be added to this database. A letter for permission to place on JOWBR from the Trustee of the University has been received.
The Early American SIG website contains a paper on the history of the early Jewish community of Vincennes, IN which can be accessed at: http://www.jewishgen.org/EarlyAmerican/vincennes/VINCENNES.html
