Cemetery Description: |
Sits in part of a square bounded by Elysian Fields Avenue, Frenchmen, Stephen Girard and Lombard Streets. Three local congregations (Anshe Sfard, Beth Israel and Chevra Thilim) jointly purchased land for the cemetery. One of several benevolent societies that formed near the turn of the century to assist East European Orthodox Jewish immigrants; it provided burials for the poor and needy immigrants. The cemetery, which opened in 1897, is still active.
