Cemetery Description: |
The cemetery is in a very poor and neglected condition, the gravestones lying on the ground, some broken, no one is taking care of the place. Herbarium is particularly high and there are gravestones with anti-Semitic graffiti. The Ternopil Jewish Cemetery on Mykulynetska Str. is the second cemetery which was opened in 1840. Inscriptions on the graves are written in German and/or Hebrew. The first cemetery in Tarnopil was on Ostroskoho Str. but unfortunately, nothing remains. The cemetery on Mykulynetska Str. was closed in 1941.
Thanks to Natalia Porokhnyak who photographed all the pictures of the tombstones that could be reached in the cemetery. Thanks to Roni Pelled, Michael Zmora, Yehuda Atlas, Yossi Yagur, and Iseec Opler who worked to decipher the inscriptions on the stones.
