Cemetery Description: |
The Jews escaping from Brazil because of the Inquisition brought their sugar knowledge to Barbados. Later, increased sugar taxes there resulted in many heading to Central America and other Caribbean islands, including Nevis, in 1679-80. Nevis had already become the richest island in the British Empire by 1650. The Jews on Nevis were first restricted to being merchants in the sugar trade, but later some became planters. And yes, there were those who owned slaves. Fifteen of the surviving nineteen grave markers have decipherable inscriptions.
