We catalogued the old Jewish Cemetery in Jonava, Lithuania on July 4, 2001. Regina Kopilevich read the stones aloud, and I wrote the information down. Thare are probably many errors of transcription, and no effort was made to be consistent with the spellings of the names.
The entire cemetery has been reset--the stones are in 18 straight rows of ten stones with a collection of broken stones at the end. I have heard the estimate that only one third of the original stones are left, but I have no proof of that.
Some of the stones are in excellent condition. Others are worn with the years, and some have been recently vandalized. I did my best with the transcriptions and the dates, but it is possible (even likely) that there are errors. If you find an error, please let me know and I will do my best to correct it.
The Jonava Research Group has begun a project to translate the death records from Jonava. When this project is complete, we may be able to match the stones to the death certificates for more information. If you are interested, please contact Peggy Mosinger Freedman |
