Cemetery Description: |
Helkat Mehokek by Asher Leib Brisk According to members at two of Jerusalem's oldest Jewish burial societies, Brisk began his register from the Mount of Olives crest, the section later to be completely destroyed during the period of Jordanian rule,1948-1967, at which time a hotel was built and a road paved at the site. Brisk envisioned registering all the Mount of Olives tombstones, but died before achieving this.
Sometimes Brisk copied the 'Hevra Kadisha', Jewish burial society records for various sites, the tombstones being of men, women and children. About 1,500 inscriptions pertain to Sephardic Jews and some 6,500 to Ashkenazis. Of them, over 3,000 are of children, many without any identifying details.
