Cemetery Description: |
Thuringia. This information was donated by Christian Repkewitz, the 2015 Obermayer German Jewish History Award recipient. Information about him can be seen at http://obermayer.us/award/awardees/repkewitz-eng.htm. He has published three books about Jewish life in Altenburg and more information is available at http://christian-repkewitz.de/index.php/de. Altenburg did not have a Jewish cemetery and the community buried its dead in Leipzig. That said some Jews were buried in the municipal cemetery and they are recorded here as well as Jewish forced laborers who were buried in mass graves in the cemetery. Altenburg and also the nearby small town Meuselwitz had satellite camps from Buchenwald where the forced laborers had to work for the German armaments production (the HASAG was a big armament factory). Further information and photographs of the monument can be seen at http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/altenburg_friedhof.htm
