Cemetery Description: |
The Jewish cemetery near Bornich is presumed to have been established at the end of the 17th century, shortly after 1681. It was a common cemetery for the Jewish communities of Bornich, Bogel, St Goarshausen and Welterod, as well as St. Goar and Werlau (on the left bank of the Rhine). About 80 gravestone have been maintained. The area of the cemetery is 31.34 ar (0.85 acre). The Jewish cemetery in Bornich is considered the loveliest Jewish cemetery in the area. Situation: The cemetery is located in a heavily wooded area (Hausecker forest) at the border of the Bornich district toward Reichenberg and Reitzenheim, pretty much in the furthest corner of the one-time district Rheinfels. Directions: Starting out from Niederwallmenach toward Bornich one needs to bear right. At a fork in the road you take the footpath on the right until you come to the woods. Here you bear left on the so-called Roemerstrasse. The cemetery is a few hundred further, on the left and well hidden. It is surrounded by a deep moat. A small bridge leads to the gate that is flanked by 2 sandstone posts. |
