The Jeff Malka Sephardic CollectionSephardic Ketubot from Algeria
The National Library of Israel located in Jerusalem has an online Database dedicated to Ketubot (marriage contracts) from all over the world at: http://web.nli.org.il/. This database includes the marriage contracts from its own collection but also from various Israeli institutions such as the Ben Zvi Institute, Museum of Israel, etc., as well as from large collections from outside the country such as the Jewish Theological Seminary (New York), the Dahan Collection (Brussels) etc. The present index includes 33 Ketubot from Algiers, Anaba (Bone), Blida and Oran. The period covered by these Ketubot begins in 1832 and ends in 1953 includes some 140 persons. For each Ketuba, the researcher will find its url in order to be able to immediately view it as well as the surnames of the groom and bride, their given names and their fathers' names. The surnames are here spelled according to their usual forms as they were written in French. The given names are spelled according to transliteration rules. AcknowledgementsWe acknowledge the tremendous contributions and lifelong dedication of Mathilde Tagger, z"l who made this index available. For many years, and right until her untimely death, Mathilde Tagger was a very close friend and collaborator with Jeff Malka. Together they worked to promote Sephardic genealogy research and educate the public about its enormous potential. Mathilde compiled this information based upon the original source material: Klarsfeld, Serge. Mémorial de la Déportation des Juifs de France. Paris, 1978. In addition, we express our grateful appreciation to Dr. Jeff Malka for his monumental ongoing effort to collect and make accessible Sephardic genealogical information, and for his generosity in contributing his extraordinarily valuable collection to JewishGen.
