Gymnasium Students

Background

This database compiles information culled from documents in student records of both public and private gymnasia from the interwar years. Student files may contain a variety of record types, such as an enrollment request, grade or examination reports, an extract of a birth record, correspondence, a graduation or leaving certificate, and others. Many of the files include a photo of the student.

Rather than synthesize a single entry per student by drawing on all the documents in a student's file, each document with useful information was extracted into its own entry. Thus, very commonly, a given student has several entries in the database and, inevitably, there is some redundancy. As a specific example, Bella AJZENBERG has two entries in the database. Both show her date and place of birth, but one shows she graduated in 1939 while the other gives her family's residential
