Jews Living in Piedmont, Italy who were deported to
Nazi Concentration Camps.
Introduction by: James Caradonio
BACKGROUND
This list contains the names of Jews living in Piedmont, Italy, who were deported to Nazi concentration camps. The names came from Dr. Segre’s 3 volume “The Jews of Piedmont”. Individuals were included in the list if they were identified as being Jewish (the Italian text says: perche ebrea = because he/she was Jewish) and were therefore identified as being arrested because they were Jewish. Some individuals were unfortunately living in Piedmont at the time of the deportations, but were born elsewhere.
The Aravecchia concentration camp was located in Vercelli, outside of Turin. The Vercelli camp had the largest number of Jewish residents. "Following a telegram signed by the Minister of the Interior Guido Buffarini Guidi who ordered the internment of Jews in special concentration camps, on 6 December Morsero ordered to act "with the utmost diligence and strict criteria" and instructed the mayor of Vercelli, Mario Busca, to set up a concentration camp at the Aravecchia farmhouse, which became operational on 24 December. On December 9, it was decided that seals were to be placed on Jewish homes
