Ebensee SurvivorsIntroduction by Peter Landé
BackgroundIn 1998, Rabbi Sidney Hercztach gave the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum a typed list of 678 male Czech Ebensee prisoners dated May 18, 1945. (Ebensee was liberated May 9, 1945). The information consisted of names, concentration camp numbers, age, place of birth and "date of entry and release". These dates range from 1943 to May 1945 (most in 1945), and, given the nature of this list, I assume that all survived. Judging by the names, most or all the persons listed were Jewish. The legibility of the list varies and town names are spelled in various way. The Austrian authorities responsible for Mauthausen (Ebensee was a sub-camp) did not have this list and a copy has been sent to them.
