The 1948 Warsaw Survivors ListIntroduction by Jenni Buch
This database includes 5,680 records of Holocaust survivors from Warsaw as of 1948. BackgroundThis list was originally compiled by the Head Office of the Warsaw Landsmanschaften in the U.S. Zone in Germany. Preparation of the list was begun after a decision by the central committee at a general meeting on the 15th April 1947 in Munich. It voted to register all the surviving Warsaw Jews scattered all over Germany in various Displaced Persons camps and towns. A great many of the listed survivors, including the majority of family groups, had fled east into in Soviet Union in 1939 upon the Nazi invasion and returned from the Soviet Union in 1946 / 1947. Therefore it was decided to register them. The office of the Central Committee was located at Kunigden Strasse 49, Munich. The committee was headed by: Engineer Henryk Rechtman, Deputy Chairmen - Dr. Julian Bentman and Hirsch Altuski, and Dr. Henryk Fenigstein - General Secretary. The data was entered as written - the spelling is Polish with some German spelling. The list was actually written in Yiddish but Latin letters were used as there were no typewriters with the Hebrew alphabet available at that time. It is a valuable resource for researchers, especially since many maiden names are included. Unfortunately, not all the fields were filled in by everyone, a few survivors merely state their names and present locations.
