Background

Mszana Dolna is located in the Kraków Administrative District of Poland and is approximately 29 miles SSE of Kraków, 29 miles W of Nowy Sącz.  Prior to WW I, Mszana Dolna was in the Austrian Empire's province of Galicia.

According to information on the IAJGS International Cemetery Project site, "There is a mass grave in Mszana Dolna as Jews from this small town and villages around were concentrated in Mszana (ghetto without fence) and later executed.  There is a monument there for 881 people but local inhabitants say that there were many more of them.  This place is called "Na Stawach."  It was out of the town at that time but now has some houses around.  This area was exceptional in that in this part of the country Germans did not send Jews to the camps.  Reportedly, many managed to escape and lived hidden in villages."

The census database includes the 881 names of those who are memorialized on the monument.

Acknowledgments

The information contained in this database was indexed from the files of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM File AA0069).  According to the donor, Mr. Jacob Weissberger, the typed original of this list was created by the Judenrat of Mszana Dolna.  In 1945, a Pole who had hidden the list after most of the local Jews were killed in an action on 15-Jun-1942, gave it to Mr. Weissberger and another survivor when they returned to Mszana Dolna.  Edward Mitelsbach, a JewishGen volunteer, compiled the list.

In addition, thanks to JewishGen Inc. for providing the website and database expertise to make this database accessible.  Special thanks to Warren Blatt and Michael Tobias for their continued contributions to Jewish genealogy.  Particular thanks to the Research Division headed by Joyce Field and to Nolan Altman, coordinator of Holocaust files.
