Background

This is a list of the names of 180 Hungarian Jewish women sent in 1944 from Hungary to Auschwitz and then for forced labor in Germany.  The women were kept together as a group.

The group was initially sent to Płaszów for a few weeks and then returned to Auschwitz.  They were then sent in boxcars to Rochlitz, a subcamp of Flossenburg concentration camp.  The trip was terrible since it was very cold and they were starving, weak and thirsty.  In Rochlitz conditions improved with more food and better places to sleep.  They were taught to operate machines to make spare parts for airplanes.  The group was then sent to Calw, near Stuttgart where they were forced to work from seven in the evening until seven in the morning.  They were not allowed to leave the factory building and could not even see daylight since the guards did not want it known that they were working there.

One day they were led from the factory and forced to walk in the bitter cold without warm clothing, adequate shoes and limited food for nearly 400 kilometers to Garmisch Partenkirchen, where they were finally liberated by American troops on 28 April 1945.  Miraculously, only one woman in the group perished before liberation.
