Würzburg, Germany is located in Lower Franconia at 49°48' N, 9°56' E. This database lists 276 persons from an appendix in the German book Biographisches Handbuch Würzburger Juden 1900-1945, by Reiner Strätz. The appendix lists Jews who were brought to Würzburg only some weeks or months prior to their deportation. They were then provided shelter and gathered in Jewish institutions and thus became inhabitants of Würzburg for a certain period. The list includes also a number of presumably Jewish victims from Würzburg, who were born or lived in Würzburg, but whose residence in Würzburg after 1900 could not be verified or could be evidenced only for a short period. These persons were mainly deported from other towns and communities. (Source: Bundesarchiv Koblenz).
The appendix is not a documentation about all Jews from Lower Franconia who were deported. Deportations of former Würzburgian Jews are listed in the Würzburg database. Lacking are only those persons, who arrived in Würzburg days or hours prior to their deportation.
In the summary of a report concerning the “Evacuations of Jews from Mainfranken” dated 6th August 1943, the Gestapo counts 2063 deportees.Six transports left Würzburg and one departed from Kitzingen near Würzburg. Emigration from the numerous small rural Jewish communities (Landgemeinden) in Lower Franconia, which had been in process for decades, increased after 1933 and extended dramatically immediately after the pogrom of November 1938, when many Jews fled or were displaced. Due to bureaucratic restraints the migration/emigration then reached a certain standstill until villages and small towns, where mostly only a handful of Jews remained, were made “clean of Jews” (judenrein) by order of the “Endlösung” (The Final Solution).
The deportations from Würzburg were as follows:
