The Genealogical Research Division of

Vienna Family Lists

Background

Jews were expelled from Vienna in 1670 and thereafter only a small number were allowed to settle in the Austrian capital. Those given permission were called Tolerierten. After the reforms of Josef II, Austria kept records of the tolerated Jews in so-called Familienlisten (Family Lists) which recorded the Jew with the permission as well as all household members, not only family members but also servants and employees. The lists were maintained until 1848. These lists have been preserved and the index is the source of this data collection.
