Prague Old Jewish CemeteryBackgroundThe Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague was established in the first half of the 15th century along with the Old-New Synagogue and is one of the most important historic sites in Prague´s Jewish Town. The oldest tombstone (the grave of the poet and scholar Avigdor Karo) dates from 1439. Burials took place in the cemetery until 1787 with nearly 13,000 tombstones for a far greater number of persons buried here. Enlarged a number of times in the past, the area did not suffice so earth was brought in to add layers so that the cemetery contains several burial layers, one on top of another. This database was compiled by Joshua Grayson from several sources, principally Simon Hock (1815-1887)’s Die Familien Prags, published posthumously in 1892 by David Kaufmann and a concurrent effort by Leopold Popper (1826-1885). The index created by Popper is available on the website of the Jewish Museum of Prague.
