Formal genealogical studies have long been prepared and published for Courland, focusing on the German nobility who dominated the region for centuries. A genealogical journal, Jahrbuch für Genealogie, Heraldik und Sphragistik, was published until early in the 20th century. In the 1909-10 volume (pp. 158-245), an article appeared by Wilhelm Räder and Oskar Stavenhagen titled "Bürgerliste und Ratslinie der Stadt Goldingen bis zum Jahr 1889", presenting an exhaustive discussion and presentation of names of almost 2000 citizens and civic leaders between the mid-16th century and 1889. Despite the journal's focus on the German population, Jews were included in these lists, but the authors commented on the very first page of the article on the difficulty of fully reconstructing the list of Jewish residents. More than 150 of the names in the lists are identifiable as being Jewish, and these records have been transcribed and translated by Eric Benjaminson. Among the earlier entries on the list, dating back to the period when Jews were still acquiring surnames, the name listed in the Surname column may in fact be the patronymic instead.
