From That Fire

From that fire which marked your charred and tortured body
We carried a torch which lights our souls
We lit with it the flame of freedom
We carried it to battles for our land
We took the pain, the unimaginable pain,
And we poured it into stonecutters' tools and sharpened ploughs.
We turned your humiliation into guns.
Your eyes became a beacon directing ships at night.

We took a sooty and broken stone
From the calamity of your destroyed town.
It became a cornerstone and a foundation
For an impenetrable wall.
Your words, smothered in flames,
Are sung by our frontline units.
Honor and courage accompany it.
Also the ancient hope, which will not disappear.

We have avenged your bitter and lonely death
Our fists are heavy and strong.
Here we built a memorial to the burnt-out ghetto.
It is a living eternal memorial.
