May God remember the souls of our Brethren of Israel who resided in the city of Kalish and became martyrs and heroes during the Holocaust; thirty thousand Jews who were slain, murdered, strangled and buried alive; the entire holy congregation of Kalish who were destroyed and hallowed the name. May God remember how they were offered up with the other martyrs and heroes of Israel since time untold; and may their souls be bound up in the bundle of life. they were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in death they were not divided. may they rest in peace where they lie. and let us say Amen. |

Memory of those who fell in the Wars of Israel
AVRUNIN, JOSEPH son of SAMUEL and ESTHER Born 1925 in Tel-Aviv. Educated at the Ben Yehuda Secondary School and active in the "Sea Scouts", where he was an Instructor. He was sent on an advanced course in Maritime Services on board the Neptune and was killed in action at sea. He was brought to burial on 4th Tishri 5704 (1943). BET-HALEVI, ABRAHAM BEZALEL son of ISRAEL DAVID and HAYA PEARL Born in Kalish on Lag Be-Omer 5673 (1913). In 1939 joined a Football Team which went to Australia, and remained there to study at a High School for Science and Commerce. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War he volunteered to join the Australian Army with the aim of returning to Eretz Israel in its ranks. He fell in the line of duty on 25th Tevet 5704 (1944). FEIERMANN, BARUCH son of YEHIEL MEIR and .JUDITH
Born in Blaszki, arrived in Israel 1948 as a member of MaHaL (Overseas Volunteers) and joined the Givati Brigade. Fell in battle on 14th, Tishri 5709 (1948) and was buried at the Military Cemetery in Kfar Warburg.

FENICHEL, HAYYIM son of MENAHEM and NEHAMA nee ENGEL of Kalish Born in Kfar Saba in 1947, graduated from his Secondary School, was an Instructor of the Noar Oved and a Sergeant in the Israel Defense Army. He fell in the Battle of Rafiah during the Six Day War, and on 29th June 1967 was buried in Kfar Saba. FROMMER, ABRAHAM HAYYIM son of NAHMAN and JUDITH Born in Tel-Aviv 1938. Secondary School education. Entered in the Israel Defense Army. He fell in the Battle of Rafiah suitability for Officers' rank. On 22nd Iyyar 5718 (1958) he was mortally wounded during training, when a grenade he carried in his belt exploded, and was buried in the Military Cemetery of Kiryat Shaul. GLOWINSKI, ARIEH son of ISAAC and HINDA Born in Kalish in 1920, came to Eretz Israel with his parents in 1935, completed his studies at an evening Secondary School. He was active in Gadna and the Hagana, volunteered in December 1947, took part in the defense of the Sharon villages, the opening of the road to Jerusalem, the battles for Lydda and Ramleh and the attempt to breach the Faluja Pocket. He fell at Irak al Manshiah and was buried at Faluja on 20.10.1948. His remains were afterwards transferred to the Military Section of the Nahlat Yitzhak Cemetery. GOTCHAL, ZVI son of JOSEPH and HANNAH nee ANZER
Born in Tel-Aviv on 2nd Tammuz 5688 (1928) and studied at the Balfour Secondary School. After serving as Super numerary Constable at Beit Shean he commenced his studies at the Hebrew University on 29th September, 1947. When the Call to Arms came he abandoned his studies and together with dozens of his companions volunteered and was sent to the Etzion Block. He participated in battles in and around Jerusalem for the liberation of the Jewish Quarters. On 1st May, 1948 he fell on the Katamon Front. He was buried in Sanhedria, and on 9th Marheshvan 5712 (1951) his remains were transferred to the Military Cemetery on Mount Herzl.
Born in Haifa 28th December 1939, completed the Technical School of the Haifa Technical Institute. Captain in the Air Force, Navigator-Pilot. Died 7.6.1967 during the Six Day War in an attack on the H3 Airfield in Iraq. Buried in Haifa on 2.8.1967, after his remains were returned from Iraq.

ISRAELOVITCH, ISAAC son of ABRAHAM Born in Kalish, 1923, received an elementary education and found employment as a metal worker at an early age, A member of Hashomer Hatzair, he came to Eretz Israel in 1947 and joined the Palmah. Fell in the attack on the Nebi Yusha Police Station in Upper Galilee on 20.4.1948 and was buried in the Nebi Yusha Military Cemetery. KAPLAN, AVNER, son of ISRAEL and RACHEL (daughter of the late Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Zvi Pessah Frank) Born 25th Sivan 5797 (1937) in Jerusalem, the first-born child of his parents, showed his devotion to his studies and rare spiritual qualities from his early childhood. Graduated with distinction from the Ohel Shem Secondary School in Ramat Gan, was active in the Halutz Youth Movement where he was an Instructor, and later joined Nahal.
During the Sinai Campaign in 1956 he was injured in the spine on the way to Sharm es Sheikh (Mifratz Shlomo). After his recovery he became a member of Tel Katzir Kibbutz. He was killed in an accident at Tel Katzir soon after Passover 1959. KOCHMAN, SIMEON son of YEHIEL and ESTHER RIVKA Born on 6th Marheshvan 5685 (1924). On finishing Secondary School he enlisted as a Supernumerary Policeman at Kiriat Hayyim and was an active member of the Hagana. Upon the outbreak of the War of Liberation he left his work and engaged in defense activities. He fell in the Battle for Bet Afa on 11th Tammuz 5708 (1948). LEWKOVITCH, JOSEPH son of ZVI
Born in Kalish, 1927. When the War broke out he was cut off from his family, moved from camp to camp and suffered starvation and other distresses under the Nazis. In 1945 he was liberated by the Allied Forces and joined a group of Halutzim. With the aid of the members of the Jewish Brigade he proceeded to Hachshara in Italy, reached Eretz Israel as a Maapil at the end of 1945 and became a member of Kibbutz Hulata. There he found his place in work and social life, and fulfilled his duties on guard and in defense. While on his way to aid Mishmar Hayarden on 5.6.1948 he was injured by a shell. He was buried in Kibbutz Hulata.

LITTMAN (AVTALION ), PINHAS son of RABBI JACOB ZEEV and GITTEL Born in Kalish on 21st Marheshvan 5686 (1926) and came to Eretz Israel in 1936. Went through Secondary School. At the age of 17 he responded to the wartime summons "to Arms or Farms" and proceeded to serve at Sdeh Eliahu Kibbutz, where he joined the Jewish Settlement Police. In a fray with Arabs he was severely wounded but recovered. After two and a half years of service in the Special Police he became a student at the Agricultural Faculty of the Hebrew University. In December 1947 he enlisted and fought in the vicinity of Jerusalem. During the fighting at Ramat Rachel he was severely wounded and died. LUBELSKY (ALON), DAVID son of MOSHE and DEBORAH Born in Tel-Aviv 1925, received an elementary education. Served in the Palmah for five years. Upon completion of service joined an independent Kibbutz which settled at Nirim, where he was in charge of security. In the attack of 15th May, 1948 the Nirim settlers under his command repulsed the enemy but he himself was mortally wounded by shrapnel. He was buried the same day in Kibbutz Nirim. NAPARSTEK, SAMUEL son of DAVID and HANNAH Born in Kalish 1920, ran away to the Russian Zone at the outbreak of the Second World War. Served in the Red Army from the age of nineteen and was sent to a Training School for Officers. After the War he came to Eretz Israel and immediately volunteered for military service. He fought in the Hills of Jerusalem and was wounded near Kibbutz Harel. Next day he went into action at Bet Jemal. On the way back his car was blown up by a mine. He died of his wounds on 19.10.1948 and was buried in Kiryat Anavim. PULVERMACHER, ABRAHAM son of ISAAC and MINA ABRAHAM
Born in Kalish 1924, came to Eretz Israel in 1935, received a secondary education. Joined the Hagana in which he served for seven years. At the outbreak of the War of Liberation he enlisted in the Givati Brigade, participated in opening the road to Jerusalem and the Battles of the South and the Negev. Fatally injured in the Battle for Bet Afa on 18.7.1948, and was buried in the Military Section of the Nahlat Yitzhak Cemetery. He was awarded the rank of Lieutenant posthumously on 23.1.1951. |

SILBERMAN, ISAAC son of ELIEZER and ESTHER Born in Eretz Israel 1929, member of the Hagana from the age of fourteen. He studied at the Montefiore Technical School and worked at the Tel-Aviv Electricity Plant. In December 1947, after the United Nations vote approving the establishment of the Jewish State, he volunteered and took part in the Battles for the Sharon settlements and Tel Aviv. He was sent to Military Hospital by order of the Medical Officer, but left it of his own accord and returned to his unit. On 26.5.48 he fell in the Battle for Latrun and was buried there. His remains were transferred to the Military Cemetery at Mount Herzl on 17.11.1949. SHELAK, MOSHE YAAKOV (MELNIK) son of ZVI and SARAH
Born in Kalish 1924, attended Secondary School. During the Second World War was imprisoned in a Camp but shortly before the liberation escaped by jumping from a train. He came to Eretz Israel and volunteered for Aliya B work, particularly frontier crossing. Disguised as a Greek he led immigrants across the frontiers of Austria and Italy, and was wounded several times by frontier guards. He reached Eretz Israel again in 1946. At the commencement of the War of Liberation he joined the Palmah and served in the Portzim (Break-through) Unit of the Harel Brigade. On 10.6.1948 he was wounded at Kiryat Anavim and died two days later. He was buried at Sanhedria and on 16th Marheshvan 5712 SHILOH, JACOB son of MOSHE and YONINA (SHELAH)
Born in Kalish 1935 and came to Eretz Israel from Belgium in 1949 as a member of the Youth Aliya. Educated in Gan Shmuel Kibbutz. Volunteered at 17, remained in the Standing Army reaching the rank of Rav Seren (Major), and was sent to a course of Paratroop Training in France. Upon completion of the Course he received an International Prize for Free Parachuting. Took part in all paratroop activities of the Israel Defence Army and trained beginners. In the Battle of Shechem during the Six Day War he was fatally wounded by a sniper and was buried in Afula on 7.6.67. |

SHKLANOWSKI, SAMUEL ISAAC son of YEHIEL YEHUDA and SHOSHANA Born in Tel-Aviv 1925 and studied at Secondary School, member of the Hagana from 14. At the age of 17 he joined the Supernumerary Police and served at Shaar Hagolan until 1945. Upon the commencement of the pre-State fighting he took part in the defense of the Tel-Aviv suburbs. He was sent to the Negev in December 1947, helped to guard the Water Pipe Line and the Supply Convoys to the Negev and Jerusalem, in the vicinity of which he also fought. On 13th Iyyar 5708 (1948) while training he felt that the safety catch of the grenade in his hand had opened. There were more than 20 members of his Unit in the Training Hall with him. He dashed out and the grenade burst in his hands. He was buried in the Military Section of the Nahlat Yitzhak Cemetery. WACHS, ZEEV son of ISAAC DAVID and NEHA Born in Kalish in 1922, came to Eretz Israel and afterwards went to France. During the Second World War he returned and worked at the Government Printing Works in Jerusalem. In 1944 he volunteered for the Jewish Brigade and took part in its Campaigns. After demobilization he went back to his former work in Jerusalem and lived in the Old City. Upon the outbreak of the fighting at the end of 1947, and while still working at the Government Printers, he and his comrades organized the defense of the Jewish workers at the Press. He was then called to the Jewish Defense Services and participated in the guarding of the convoys which brought supplies to the settlements round Jerusalem. On 6.4.1948 he fell in the Battle of Mount Castel and was buried in the Maaleh Hahamisha Kevutza. On 12th Kislev 5714 (1953) his remains were transferred to the Military Cemetery at Mount Herzl, Jerusalem. YITZHAKI, ARIEH son of ELIJAH ITZIK and DEBORAH
Born in Kalish, 1914, came to Eretz Israel with his parents in 1924, studied at the Tahkemoni Religious School. From his childhood he was an active member of the Betar Youth Movement, afterwards joined the Irgun Zevai Leumi and was active in the Underground. He fell while preparing explosives in the vicinity of Tel Aviv during 1939, and on 21st Av 5699 (1939) was buried in the Nahlat Itzhak Cemetery. |
