The Shtetl' Felczer Biegelajzen

Translated by Ada Holtzman

Biegelajzen family

I had seen the photograph of the Biegelajzen family and I decided to dedicate to him a few words.

BIEGELAJZEN was a male nurse by profession and was considered as a half doctor. He was the “Felczer”, the village healer.

He took care of my dying father Eliahu after was harshly beaten by anti-Semites on one of his occupational trips in Poland.

I still remember him coming to his good friend all the time but nothing helped and my father died. It was in 1922 and I was only 8 years by then, but I remember this very well. BIEGELAJZEN was our family friend and came to visit us often afterwards.

I remember his optimism and his calming and soothing treatment whenever someone was sick at the shtetl. If you look for an image of a family doctor, the example of BIEGELAJZEN is the model to follow.
