Translated by Gloria Berkenstat Freund
Edited by Philip Shapiro
The words of our ancient ancestors were correct when they said that Speech that flows from the heart penetrates our hearts.
I am sure that here, too, my esteemed reader, [you] have experienced our pain and your heart grasps our dear shtetele [small town] with its martyrs, who perished in a cruel misfortune.
And now, if you are someone from our shtetl, we ask that you be so good as to look into our Olkeniki book at least twice a year, during the memorial days, that is, rosh khodesh [the start of the Hebrew calendar month of] Tishrei and the 10th day of Tevet, on the anniversary of [its] death and to remember European Jewry.
And if you would light a memorial candle for the souls of your family and friends and let a tear fall, know that your tear contributes to the sea of tears of your suffering people.
And you have a duty; you shall tell your children and grandchildren; you shall instruct them to the last generation what was done to you and to your people by the Amalekites[1] of our era the cursed Nazis.
And the members of your family who were fortunate to arrive in their fatherland, Israel, and all of the Jews who are spread over the world, may they sit calmly without fear and without terror and may they be worthy of a complete redemption of the Jewish people and the Land of Israel.
