A county town in the Siauliai district, 16 km south west of Kursenai. The town is an ancient inhabitation and is known from the 17th century. In 1923 the town had 212 inhabitants including 38 Jews. According to a survey conducted by the Lithuanian government in 1931, the Jews owned a timber mill. After the German conquest of Lithuania in June 1941, the local Jews shared the fate of their neighboring brethren.
