Gelgaudiskis

In Yiddish, Gelgudishok

Written by Josef Rosin

Translated by Shimon Joffe

This is a small town in the Sakiai district, near Neishtot (Kudirkos Naumiestis)-Sakiai. In 1799 it had 318 inhabitants with 6 Jews among them. In the 1930's, during the period of Lithuanian independence, the town had 3-4 Jewish families.

According to a survey conducted by the Lithuanian government in 1931, the Jews in Gelgaudiskis owned one textile shop, one wood mill and a brick yard. The fate of the Jews was the same as that of other Jews in the area after the German invasion.
