Alvitas

Written by Josef Rosin

Translated by Shaul Yannai

In Yiddish, Alvite

A county town in the Vilkaviskis district, about 12 km west of Vilkaviskis, the district's city. In 1923 there were 283 inhabitants in Alvitas, 31 of them were Jews. Near the town was an estate owned by a Jew by the name of Moshe Goldberg. The name of the estate was Unijos dvaras. In 1939 there were 9 telephones in Alvitas, one of them belonged to a Jew. In June of 1941, when the Germans conquered Lithuania, the fate of the Jews in Alvitas was the same as the fate of the other Jews in the area.
