Index created by Ilene Wagner with assistance from Judy Brodkey

The Sefer ozieran vehaseviva (Memorial Book, Jezierzany and Surroundings) was written in 1959 and edited by M.A. Tenenblatt in Jerusalem.
It is divided into 6 sections, most of which were originally written in Hebrew. A few of the sections were originally written in Yiddish. Each section is numbered according to column markers in the original manuscript. Interpreting Hebrew without Vowels The original book was primarily written in Hebrew and did not include vowels. Translators often had to guess regarding the English translation of a particular name or word in the text. For that reason, you may see odd spellings and name variations for a single individual because the actual name wasn't clear to the translator. Variations in vowel sounds, e.g. Dovid versus David, should not be considered consequential in most cases. If you are searching for a particular individual, you may want to browse the entire list to search for a relative under more than one surname. Missing and Misplaced Column Numbers Column numbers 104, 108, 110, 116, 210, and 216 from the original manuscript were inadvertently left out of the English translation although the actual text of those pages appears in the online English translation. The index includes all people named in those sections based on the column number in the English translation. In a few cases, column numbers were duplicated or reversed. Column 395 appears before and after 396. Column numbers 215, 451, 452, 455, 456, 485 and 486 appear twice. The duplicate column number sections usually appear in close proximity to each other. Necrology Lists and the Names Index The names in this index were derived from all 6 sections of the book. Section E, Holocaust and Destruction, includes lists of Jewish people who died during the Holocaust. We did not copy the necrology names into the Names Index so you will want to search for people in both the appropriate necrology list and in the Names Index. In some cases, names will be included in both. However, some names may be listed in a necrology list that will not be found in the Names Index. Yiddish, Hebrew and English You will find Yiddish, Hebrew and English names in the index. In most situations, we kept the spelling of names as written by the HebrewtoEnglish or YiddishtoEnglish translators. Multiple Listings and Name Variations Many names appear more than once in the book but are spelled slightly differently each time or the name has been left out and only initials appear. Where it was clear that the names refer to a single person, we have done our best to crossreference them in the notes column. However, it was impossible to find and document every instance of crossreferenced names. If it wasn't absolutely clear that different spellings referred to the same person, we have listed the name under two or more alternative spellings. Names and Occupations Until sometime in the mid19th century, most eastern European Jews were not required to have family surnames. Instead, children were usually identified as son of (e.g. Mendel Bar David) or daughter of (e.g. Ruchel Bat David.) Some adult Eastern European Jews were also identified by their occupation, e.g.Chaim dem Chazen, Chaim the cantor. For the most part, if no customary last name was given but the occupation appeared preceded by dem, implying the person was identified by their occupation, indexers included the occupation in the Comments column. In a few cases, it was unclear whether an occupation was only referring to the person's job or might be their actual surname. In that case, indexers sometimes included that under surname. For example, shochet could refer to someone's job as a ritual slaughterer but also might be an actual surname. Missing Surnames and Given Names Some names in the text are missing a surname. For the most part, those names are included under the Unknown Surnames section at the end of the Names Index. Unclear Whether a Name is A Given Name or Surname In a few situations where it was unclear whether a name was a surname or given name, indexers have included the name both in the Surname and Given Name columns and referenced that in the Comments column. Jezierzany Landsmenshaften and Gemilat Chesed References Some individuals in the Names Index were incorrectly identified as leaders of the Jezierzany landsmenshaften in New York City. In actuality, they were involved with the local Gemilat Chesed charity fund. Consult the original English text of the Yzkor book for clarification. |
