Some notes on spellingLexicon of Courage was translated from Russian into Hebrew. This list was translated and transcribed from the Hebrew text. In the Hebrew edition, the family names of the partisans as well as their personal names also appear in Latin letters. The spelling follows the Polish pattern. When the names of parents of partisans are listed, they only appear in Hebrew in the text. The spelling generally used for transcribing Hebrew names into English is used for these names. Polish spelling is very different from what the reader may be accustomed to. Therefore, the reader will see a difference in spelling of the same name. In the list of partisans, the name Cwi is found. That is the Polish spelling for Tzvi/Zvi which is how the name will also appear. Other examples are Jicchak for Yitzhak, Uszer for Asher, Mosze for Moshe, Szulem for Shalom and Fejwel for Feivel. Following are examples of family names in their Polish form – Fajersztejn for Firestein, Fisz for Fish, Kac for Katz, Rawicki for Ravitzky and Szwarc for Schwartz. The Hebrew translation of the text also contains an extensive Index that lists all the names of people and places. The spelling follows that found in the Index with a few exceptions – Kovno instead of Kaunas, Vilna instead of Vilnius, Warsaw instead of Warszawa. The names of the partisan brigades, companies and groups are transliterated from the Hebrew spelling of the Russian names.
