Three weeks are left before November 16, when each group will show its power. Here in Hrubieszow, there isn't even the slightest sign of interest in the elections. There are “prophets” who foretell the victory of one party or another, or vice versa. But that happens at the soda stall, or in a regular conversation, which has run out of topics and turns to a few remarks about the elections. These conversations often end in despair and skepticism: only a crazy person would go and vote! In any case, it is out of our hands. Even if we have another delegate, it won't be of much use.
These are some of the opinions; the end product is – if we had a good livelihood, why not? Electing a synagogue manager, or hiring a ritual slaughterer, would be a major project. But these days, when Jews are struggling for their existence, who has the patience to play at nonsense?
The Jews of Hrubieszow were born under a special sign of the zodiac. Their election district is so splintered by election laws that there is no chance of gaining a Jewish representative. In that case, say the Jews of Hrubieszow, why vote at all?
Once and for all, we would like to put an end to these mistaken thoughts and useless arguments. We cannot – and must not – agree to let others use our ignorance. Whether we gain more or less representatives, our votes must be numerous. Let not a single Jewish vote be missing. We must not be indifferent to a right that we have attained thanks to thousands of sacrifices.
Furthermore, even in our own voting district we must not allow others to profit from our passive attitude. After all, we cannot be sure that those who win through our indifference are the ones we would prefer. It is entirely possible that the ones we don't want will be the winners.
We therefore appeal to all the Jews of Hrubieszow. Go to vote as one, and fulfill your civil duty. Don't let our enemies think that we lack all social feelings
Premature!
Last Thursday, all the local activists gathered at the home of Rabbi Verthaym, all eager to defend Jewish interests at City Hall. But we found out that we Jews of Hrubieszow are not helpless. We have an entire staff of people ready to sacrifice themselves for the local Jewish population. If you think that these 50-60 volunteers to help the community are not aware of the responsibility of their task, I must tell you that you are wrong. The future representatives know how difficult the work is that lies ahead. When they wanted to choose a committee to prepare a plan for a Jewish citizen bloc for the mayoral elections, everyone refused, and they had to cast lots. The unlucky ones who were chosen had to tackle the creation of a plan for a bloc that was still a mystery to all.
Rejoice, you Jews of Hrubieszow! You don't lack for providers!
Elections to the Town Council
Rumors have been heard around our town that elections to the town council will be announced shortly. These rumors have revived several Jewish “benefactors,” who have begun making the arrangements necessary for elections. Unofficial agitators are being sent around, to prepare the ground for elections propaganda. The word is that the local elder has already received a circular from the provincial governor to declare elections for January 18.
Another rumor is that Mr. Majewski, the commissar, wants the role of mayor; certain circles are not in favor of this.
How to Start Reducing the Budget
Our city hall has recently noticed that its budget is too large, and has decided to reduce it. They started with the street-sweepers, who are paid a total of 2-3 złoty a day. They were notified that instead of working 30 days a month, as they have been doing until now, they would be working 23 days a month.
The question is, why has the commissar picked on the street-sweepers, when there are redundant people in city hall who are paid 300-400 złoty a month?
