Double headstone of Isadore Kamber (died 19 Sep 1929) and his wife Sarah Kamber, born Crost (died 24 Jul 1928), Jewish Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park, Illinois, Gate 49 (Machziki Hadas). Please translate the Hebrew on both sides. Most important: Isadore's father's name on the second line of the right side, after the abbreviation for 'son of'. Is it Yosef (יוסף), Yose (יוסע), or Zuse (זוסע)? Please also confirm Sarah's Hebrew name and her father's name, and both Hebrew dates. Thank you!

SARAH ZELDE

daughter of Eliyahu Pinchas

her soul departed 7 Av 5688
------------------------------------------------
Zelde is Yiddish.

Eliyahu [eh-lee-YAH-hoo] is Hebrew for Elijah.

Pinchas [PIN-chahss, with the ch as in Chanukah or Bach] is a Biblical name. I've seen it renedered in English as Phineas, an old-fashioned name.

Isadore:

YISRAEL

son of Reb Susse the Cohen

His soul departed 15 Elul 5689
---------------------------------------------
Yisrael [yiss-RAH-ayl] is Hebrew for Israel

Reb is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

His name Susse [ZOO-seh, with the OO as in good], is a Yiddish name derived from the German word for 'sweet'.

He was a Cohen, a member of the priestly tribe. The first priest was Aaron, Moses' brother, and this designation is passed down from father to son. Cohanim (the plural) had specific functions in the Temples, and still receive special recognition -- and have special obligations -- today.

The symbol over his name depicts the priestly hands in position to bless the congregation.

The 15th of Elul, 5689, began at sunset on September 19th, 1929, and ended at sunset on the 20th. The secular date on the stone is September 19th, which would narrow down the time of his death to between sunset and midnight of that date.
