Would appreciate any help with very worn inscription. Appears to say FATHER at top. Surrounding graves are for those who died between 1897 and 1902. Thank you very much for considering.

On  Response
9/27/2026 10:14 PM Yes, the top definitely says “FATHER”, slightly arched.

-------------------------------------------------------

Here lies

our father, our teacher, the crowning glory of our heads

(unfortunately, his name is extremely eroded. He might have had a double name: possibly Mordechai followed by a short name. Or, this line might begin with an abbreviation for “our teacher, our rabbi”, followed by a single, short, name.

Thus, the line reads):

M_____ ______ son of Avraham Yitzchak [or: Avraham Yaakov, or possibly Avraham Y____]. (I am sure about the Avraham part; this is Hebrew for Abraham. The second part is more difficult to decipher. Yitzchak is Hebrew for Isaac; Yaakov is Hebrew for Jacob. But, it might be another name beginning with a Y sound).

-----------------------------------------------

On the base:

He passed away on the Eve of the Holy Sabbath, the first day of Rosh Chodesh Iyyar 5658

[counting] from the Creation of the world. May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

=============================================

Without going into details about Rosh Chodesh, which is at its simplest the beginning of a new Jewish month:

The Hebrew date corresponds to “Friday” the 30th of Nisan, 5658. This date began at sunset on Thursday, April 21st and ended at sunset on Friday, April 22nd, 1898.
