Latvia & Estonia Research Division

Latvia & Estonia Research Division

Preserving and sharing the histories of Jewish communities from the former Russian Empire gubernias of Courland, southern Livonia (Livland), and western Vitebsk, along with modern-day Estonia.

About the Division

Our goal is to acquire, transcribe, translate, and share historical records of genealogical value to the descendants of Latvian and Estonian Jews, and to provide the tools and resources you need to help discover your ancestors. Our Latvia database has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, and it continues to expand as new records are translated and extracted. Please visit our dedicated website for detailed descriptions of some of the many resources available to researchers, which will be updated as new records and information become available.

Currently Working On

Our Team
The Latvia and Estonia Research Division welcomes new volunteers. We have opportunities for Hebrew and Russian speakers as translators, as well as people familiar with Old German script. We also need people familiar with spreadsheets (no language skills necessary) to compile and prepare data for loading into our database. Contact the co-directors for more information.
