Accessibility Statement
JewishGen wants everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, voice control, magnification or other assistive technology.
Our target
We aim for the pages of this site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. This is a goal we are working toward. We have not had the whole site formally audited, and we do not claim that every page meets it today.
What we do
- Pages use headings, landmarks and labeled form fields so assistive technology can follow them.
- Images that carry meaning have text alternatives.
- Keyboard focus is visible, and the main pages can be used without a mouse.
- The site offers a dark mode, and we check text contrast in both the light and dark versions.
Known limits
We would rather tell you where the problems are than hide them.
- Yizkor book pages and some other older pages. These are still in their earlier format while the site is being updated. They may lack some of the features above, such as consistent headings, landmarks or a dark mode.
- Scanned images and PDFs. Many records, book pages and documents are scans of printed or handwritten originals. Some do not have text a screen reader can read, and some PDFs are not tagged for accessibility.
- Third-party content. Some content comes from other organizations or services and is outside our direct control, such as embedded feeds, payment and donation pages, and partner websites.
- Databases and search tools. Some results tables and search forms may be harder to use with a screen reader or keyboard. We are testing these and will improve them.
- Historical material. Original-language text, old transliterations and archival images may not meet current standards.
Report a barrier
If you cannot use part of this site, or something is hard to use, please tell us.
- Email: support@jewishgen.org
- Please tell us the page address, what you were trying to do, and the assistive technology you use, if any. This helps us find the problem.
We will read every report and use it to decide what to fix.
