FROM SKIERNIEWICE TO VERMONT: FROM ROHATYN TO PALESTINE: THE HUMMEL FAMILY OF TALSI: EDITORS' NOTE - March 2014 We present three inspiring stories of determination and success. While JewishGen’s Family Finder plays a starring role, our researchers also made use of other helpful resources, discovering their families in Poland, Israel, Latvia, Canada, South Africa, Australia and the United States. Judy Simon knew very little about her Lefkowitz and Mezelsor families from Poland. Fifteen years after she posted her surnames on JewishGen’s Family Finder database, her patience is rewarded when she connects with previously unknown cousins and learns that she is related to the prominent sculptor, Simon Moselsio. Marla Raucher Osborn was curious about her grandmother’s aunt, Jüte Horn. A directory listed her as a medical doctor in Poland in 1931, a photograph was inscribed by Jüte from Haifa in 1947, and an obituary announced her death in New York in 1958. Wanting to know more about Jüte’s life, Marla’s research takes surprising twists and turns—and eventually leads her to Israel. Barbara Lichtman Tayar recently learned that her Latvian great-grandmother’s surname was Hummel—a name she hadn’t heard before. Through JewishGen’s Family Finder, Barbara connects with other Hummel descendants from around the world and, with some collaborative research, discovers how they are all linked to a common ancestor. A well-attended family reunion follows! These stories provide inspiration as well as useful tips for your family history research. JewishGen offers many resources to assist you in expanding your knowledge and connecting with family. We wish you success and encourage you to send us your stories.
