Translation of
ЄВРЕЙСЬКЕ МІСТЕЧКО МОГО ЖИТТЯ
(The Jewish Town of My Life)
Project Description
The The Jewish Town of My Life by Mikhail Kupershtyn, is a local history and biography describing the town of Satiniv, where the author's father came from, and the town of Murovani Kurylivtsi where he himself grew up, but PRIMARILY about the village and residents of Kopaigorod, where his mother came from and where his parents lived. The book has already been written and purchased by Jewish Gen and a translator is currently at work translating it. The goal of the project is to have the entire book, including the details in the captions of photos and the data within the documents, translated into English from Ukrainian. It will then be available as a PDF on JewishGen's Yizkor Book site.
Key Audiences
The primary audience for this project is people tracing their family trees, whose ancestors lived in or near Kopaigorod, Ukraine. There are currently approximately 50 researchers in the JewishGen Family Finder for Kopaigorod, but researchers in surrounding towns, including Bar, will also be interested. There is also a much broader audience in people seeking to understand the details of history of Jewish life in Ukraine in the 20th century, as well as those interested in the role of Transnistria during WW II.
Project Importance
This new book about Kopaigorod was written to provide the history and personal backgrounds of numerous Jewish families in the town. Such information is extremely scarce for Kopaigorod and for towns like it. Acquiring, translating, and making available any and all documents and datasets relating to Jews from this town and neighboring towns will benefit genealogical researchers and will help provide context for the lives of our ancestors. Many of the records for this area were destroyed in a fire in the Kamenets-Podolsky Archives in 2003, so it is particularly important to document what remains. Making the book available in English will greatly increase its accessibility.
Project Details
A professional translator for this book has been hired and translation is underway. The resulting translated book will be made available through JewishGen's Yizkor Book site. The project coordinator will proofread, edit, and prepare the text as an online PDF.
Estimated Cost
We estimate the translation project will cost $1700-$2000 to complete.
Any funds still remaining at the completion of this translation project will be used to fund additional Yizkor Book projects undertaken by the JewishGen.
