Counties referred to above are not the names of the counties in which the towns are now located, but are the historic shires (or counties) in which the relevant towns were situated prior to the reorganization of local government in 1974. Furthermore, in light of the political changes that took place in Wales during the medieval period, they are generally not the counties in which the towns were situated during the period of Jewish settlement.
Notes
3 This
community or place of settlement was listed by Cecil Roth in "A History of the Jews in England",
but its location is by no means
certain, although no reasonable alternative location could be identified.
6 Towns from which Jews had been excluded prior to 1290.

Haverford is undoubtedly Haverfordwest then apparently known as "Haverford" or Hertford in the west.
There do seem to have been Jews around the castle. The writer was told in 1981 by someone in Haverfordwest that they believed that the village of Hook, a few miles south of Haverfordwest on the banks of the Cleddau originally was made up of Flemish Jews but no direct evidence has as yet been obtained for this. During the reign of Henry I, three bands of about 10,000 each of Flemings were settled in the southern half of Pembrokeshire, their lands having been flooded in the Low Countries. Up to the 18th century this part of Pembrokeshire was often referred to as "Little Flanders", and there were still small pockets of people who could speak Flemish/Dutch. There must surely have been Jews amongst such a large number of Flemings?
