The Former Shtiebels of Willesden & Cricklewood

JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and
congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.

There were a number of Shtiebels (small prayer houses, generally comprising a single room,  the congregants of which were generally ultra-orthodox and frequently the followers of a particular rabbi) in the Willesden and Cricklewood areas of North West London.  By 1988, these had all closed.

Willesden was a municipal borough (in the former county of Middlesex), which in 1965 became part of the London Borough of Brent. The western part of Cricklewood (the area to the west of the Edgware Road/Cricklewood Broadway) was also in the former municipal borough of Willesden. However, the south-eastern part of Cricklewood was in the former metropolitan borough of Hampstead (within the area of the former London County Council), which in 1965 became part of the London Borough of Camden and the north-eastern part was in the former municipal borough of Hendon (within the area of the former Middlesex County Council), which in 1965 became part of the London Borough of Barnet.
