Relatives in St. Paul testify they will help support the Bodners


Cousin Harry Chifer's testimony was ideal. It demonstrated financial stability and a level of comfort that could afford to help newcomers. Ellis Island officials knew that dumping a new immigrant family on a family here whose finances were already strained typically ended in disaster.

Cousin Annie Moskovich's testimony was equally helpful. She described a remarkably enterprising and successful family with many community contacts. If Annie did not employ the Bodner's herself, surely she would find a job for each and every one of them.

Immigrant Inspector W.D. Morse concluded the Bodner's cousins were able to support the immigrants should they fall into distress. Note it was not simply the relatives willingness to help that persuaded Morse, but their "financial standing and earning capacity."
