The following list of members of the Free City of Danzig Citizens Committee in the United States of America, dated June 30, 1942, appears in documents at the Hoover Institution Archives, Stanford University, in the collection: Poland. Ambasada (United States) Collection, box 52, folder 6. It was transcribed from scans available on szukajwarchiwach.pl. As noted, some members also appear on an earlier December 22, 1941 list in the same collection, with scans here, and one member appears only on the 1941 list.

A letter accompanying the 1941 list explains the purpose of the Committee. It was sent by the Committee's President, Bernhard Kamnitzer, to the U.S. Secretary of State, and reads:

"We have the honor to notify you that a group of citizens of the Free City of Danzig, legally admitted to the United States of America for permanent residence, has formed a committee, to be known as the "Free City of Danzig Citizens Committee in the United States."

Every member of the group pledges, and every Danzig citizen who wants to join the group, has to pledge loyal support to his adopted country and to the ideals of democracy for which it stands.

We feel it a privilege to help in defense of our new homeland, and are ready for any kind of work that the United States Government wants us to do.

One of the cardinal principles of the foreign policy of the United States of America has been and continues to be the refusal to recognize changes, brought about by force.

It is the understanding of our committee that in keeping within this policy, the Government of the United States has not recognized the legality of any changes, affecting the Free City of Danzig

It is further the understanding of the Committee that in view of this the same distinctions between citizens of the Free City of Danzig and citizens of the German Reich that always existed, still exist. In order to avoid any misunderstanding, the Committee trusts that all competent authorities of the United States will continually bear this in mind and that under no circumstances Danzig Citizens be confused with German citizens.

We attach herewith a list of Danzig citizens who have joined our Committee. All these members arrived here on Danzig passports as legal immigrants and have subscribed to the principles of Democracy and loyalty to the United States, as expressed above. Since Danzig citizens are scattered all over the United States, we have as yet only reached a part of them. The attached list is therefore not yet definite and will be supplemented in due time."

This letter received a reply dated January 5, 1942 from Assistant Secretary of State Adolf A. Berle, Jr., acknowledging that "this Government does not recognize as legal the changes brought about by force in the status of the Free City of Danzig and it continues to distinguish between citizens of the Free City of Danzig and citizens of Germany..." The response also indicates the letter was forwarded by the Department of State to the Department of Justice.
