Uyezd/District Research Groups
(all Districts of former Kovno and Vilna guberniyas)

The uyezd or district was the administrative level at which the revision and family lists were organized. The district groups deal with revision lists, family lists, tax lists and other non vital records.

We encourage people to join together as uyezd groups to acquire records, and to enter this extremely valuable genealogical information into the All Lithuania Database (ALD).

As our individual genealogical and historical research progresses, many of us discover that our ancestors did not come from just one place. They moved from shtetl to shtetl for a variety of reasons. The effects of fires, plagues, famine, and pogroms were all part of this mobility.

Mission Statement:

The Vital Records Indexing Project seeks to raise monies for the purpose of funding the translation of approximately 800,000 Lithuanian Jewish Vital records from the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The translations produced as Excel format spreadsheets are distributed to qualified donors. We primarily seek qualifying donors for each town ($100+) as well as major contributors wishing to create challenge grants although all contributions are welcome. The translated records are eventually uploaded to the All-Lithuania Database (ALD) as prescribed by LitvakSIG policy. The current policy allows translations to go online one year after qualifying donors receive their translations.

Town Coordinators:
Barry Mann, Shtetl Coordinator, Zeimelis
David & Sonia Hoffman, Shtetl Coordinator, Ariogala, Babtai, Cekiske, Dotnuva, Rumsiskis, Grinkiskis, Seredzius
Susan Cooper, Shtetl Coordinator - Varniai
